Quick summary

ExaGear Windows Emulator from Eltechs is an Android app that tries to run x86 Windows applications on mobile devices. It combines a Wine-derived compatibility layer with an x86 CPU emulator so some desktop programs can run on ARM-based phones and tablets. The interface is minimal, and the catalogue of supported software is small and largely limited to older PC games.

How it operates

ExaGear uses a modified Wine backend plus an added x86 emulation layer to translate Windows calls for non-x86 hardware. Instead of a single global installation, each Windows title lives inside its own virtual container, and a unified launcher brings all shortcuts together.

Common navigation items (reordered):

  • Manage virtual containers
  • Install a new application
  • Open the Start menu
  • Go to the Desktop

You can tweak a few container-level settings from the app, but deep Wine controls are not exposed.

Installing Windows programs

There are two primary installation options in the app. Note the order below is reversed from some documentation you might see elsewhere.

  • Point the installer at an EXE file saved on your device (for example, in Downloads). Many programs will still require manual adjustments after installation.
  • Pick from the app’s curated list of supported titles. That collection is short and skewed toward legacy games, such as:
  • Fallout 2
  • Civilization III
  • StarCraft

If a program is not on the official list, it may not work reliably — expect trial-and-error for unsupported titles.

Major drawbacks and missing features

ExaGear demonstrates an impressive technical feat, but it leaves out several important features that limit usability:

  • The app lacks the main Wine control panel, so you cannot change the emulated Windows version or override DLLs.
  • There is no facility to mount ISO images as a virtual D: drive, preventing installation of disc-based games.
  • Many applications require manual tweaks to run; automatic compatibility is limited.
  • The supported-app selection is narrow and mostly consists of older games.
  • Desktop Windows software is typically impractical to use on small phone displays.

Buying recommendation

Technically, ExaGear is notable for being one of the few solutions that run x86 Windows programs on ARM Android devices. Practically, however, its limited feature set and small roster of supported apps make it a poor fit for most users. If you need to run a specific, well-supported legacy game on a tablet and are comfortable troubleshooting, it might be worth trying. For general-purpose Windows-on-Android use or for a phone-sized experience, the current limitations make it hard to justify the purchase.
