What this tool does
The Zulu–English dictionary runs locally on your device so you can look up Zulu words without needing an active connection. When you encounter a Zulu word inside another app, you can send that text straight to the dictionary and get an immediate translation or definition — no retyping required.
How to send words from other apps
Use the system share menu to forward text to the dictionary. Choose the "Zulu Dictionary" option after selecting the word or message, and the text will open inside the dictionary app for instant lookup.
Supported sources include:
- Web browser pages and links
- Conversations in WhatsApp
- Any other app that provides the standard sharing option
Faster searches with smart suggestions
The app includes an autosuggest/autocomplete feature. Start typing just a few letters and the dictionary will display matching entries so you can pick the correct word without completing the entire spelling. This reduces typing time and helps when you only remember part of a word.
Search behavior highlights:
- Suggestions appear as you type partial strings
- Matching ignores capitalization, so you don’t need to worry about upper- or lower-case letters
- A list of candidate words is shown, beginning with the letters you entered
Working offline and keeping the database current
Because the dictionary uses a local database, lookups and autosuggestions work even when you are offline. However, updates and new entries require an internet connection; the app will download updates when a connection becomes available so you always can refresh the local database.
Why this is useful
- Saves time by letting you share text from any app rather than typing it into the dictionary
- Lets you look up words when you have no network access
- Helps discover full word forms from partial spellings via autosuggest
