Short summary

DreadOut 2 is a third-person survival horror sequel from Digital Happiness, bringing back the series’ distinctive smartphone-based ghost-hunting mechanic. The story follows teenage Linda Melinda as she attempts to stop the awakening of the mythic serpent Blorong and prevent a supernatural catastrophe. The game blends exploration, combat, and camera-based paranormal encounters.

Narrative and script

The sequel continues with Linda as the protagonist, and a recap video is provided for players who missed the original title. The premise is interesting, but the writing often undermines the experience: dialogue and in-game text contain awkward phrasing and frequent grammatical mistakes that weaken character voice and emotional beats. The plot itself is serviceable, but the script’s execution leaves much to be desired.

Core gameplay loop

DreadOut 2 mixes different systems into its gameplay:

  • Close-quarters combat with improvised melee weapons (axes and similar tools) that push the game toward action-oriented encounters.
  • Using Linda’s smartphone camera to detect and dispel ghosts, a returning mechanic that still provides tense moments when it works as intended.

Despite the supernatural premise, much of the title plays like a hack-and-slash action game rather than a sustained psychological horror experience.

World design and exploration

One of the game’s strengths is its level and environmental design. Areas range from bustling market streets to quiet villages and mist-shrouded peaks, and even the darker interiors—mansions, cellars, and abandoned hotels—are well realized visually. Exploration is encouraged: optional quests and small collectibles reward players who take time to traverse the city and its surroundings.

Stability and technical flaws

Unfortunately, DreadOut 2 suffers from numerous technical issues that significantly impact play:

  • Boss and enemy behavior can be erratic: foes sometimes move through geometry, teleport unpredictably, or attack with split-second timing that makes fights feel unfair.
  • Level gating and side-content can be broken by bugs: sealed doors, disappearing NPCs, and glitched quests are reported frequently.

Compounding these problems is the checkpoint-only save system—no manual saves—so encountering a campaign-stopping bug can force a full restart or leave progress irretrievable.

Conclusion and compatibility

At its core, DreadOut 2 contains the bones of an enjoyable action-adventure with a strong atmosphere and varied mechanics, but persistent technical problems and weak writing hold it back. If future patches address the bugs and polish the script, it could become a much stronger recommendation. The game is compatible with Windows 11.
