Overview

Dragon Ball Xenoverse brings a new twist to the long-running Dragon Ball franchise, aiming to recapture fans’ enthusiasm after several unimpressive recent releases. Rather than retreading familiar territory, this entry invents a time-centered storyline and pairs it with multiple modes, online features, and customizable characters to keep players engaged.

A new angle on the timeline

Instead of the usual linear retelling, Xenoverse builds its plot around temporal disturbances caused by a faction tampering with history. Trunks discovers these disruptions and calls on a newly created hero — the Future Warrior — to travel through pivotal moments in the series and repair the timeline. That setup lets players revisit famous battles and also shifts focus away from the most overexposed protagonists, giving lesser-known fighters a chance to stand out.

Game modes and side activities

The core campaign is supplemented by several complementary modes that expand the narrative and replay value:

  • Parallel Quests: optional missions that deepen the main storyline with extra battles, characters, and collectibles.
  • Versus and Tournament: classic competitive formats for local or online matches with friends.
  • Toki Toki City hub: a social hub where online players replace many NPCs and where you can find mode entrances and services by exploring the environment.

Combat and progression systems

Combat happens in open 3D arenas and blends accessible controls with deeper mechanical layers. Core inputs and resource management keep fights strategic:

  • Block, heavy attack, light attack, ki blast, special abilities, and super moves
  • Ki-based costs for special/super moves prevent button-mashing and encourage timing. Beyond the button presses, progression requires preparation: level up your fighter, equip abilities that alter playstyle, and use consumable items that can turn the tide in close encounters.

Building your own warrior

Character creation is central to the experience. You create a fighter from scratch, choosing appearance, gender, and one of five species to determine base stats and unique traits. Available races include:

  • Frieza race
  • Namekian
  • Human
  • Saiyan
  • Majin As you progress you unlock clothing and cosmetic items to personalize your avatar and show off in the Toki Toki social spaces.

Presentation: graphics, camera, and audio

Xenoverse uses cell-shaded visuals to mimic the anime’s look, with modest refinements to character shading. While the characters pop vividly, backgrounds can feel less integrated, which may be noticeable to newcomers. The camera can occasionally struggle, especially during chaotic multi-opponent skirmishes, leading to disorienting perspective shifts. On the upside, the soundtrack and dual-language voice work (English and Japanese) are lively and faithfully capture the series’ anime energy.

Final assessment

If you’ve stopped looking for a definitive Dragon Ball title and instead want a fun, replayable experience, Xenoverse delivers. Its inventive story framework, variety of modes, MMO-style hub, and satisfying core combat make it one of the more enjoyable Dragon Ball games in recent memory.
