Revival of a Classic Demon-Slayer
The legendary blood-and-guts shooter makes a comeback in 2016. The original studio, id Software, has returned to reimagine Doom — the 1993 title that helped define the first-person shooter genre. Rather than the slow-burn atmosphere of Doom 3, this reboot embraces the breakneck, violent action that characterized the first two entries.
Movement and Arena Design
The game emphasizes mobility and aggressive positioning. Levels are built to reward movement: you’ll be jumping across platforms, using the environment to flank and outmaneuver hordes, and keeping momentum in combat. Key mechanics include:
- Levels that encourage constant motion and tactical traversal
- A double-jump to extend aerial options
- Reduced penalties for long falls, letting you drop from great heights without dying
- Fast base speed that supports strafing and circling enemies
Weapons, Gore, and Finishing Moves
Classic Doom tools return with updated brutality. Iconic weapons like the super shotgun and the chainsaw are brought back, and combat is punctuated with visceral finishing animations. Enemies enter a short “finisher” window before death, letting you close in and execute gruesome takedowns — wholly in line with the series’ unapologetic tone. Highlights:
- Dedicated finish states that let you perform brutal melee executions
- The chainsaw revived for close-quarters carnage
- The super shotgun reappears as a devastating mid-range option
Other Versions and Trial Options
If you want to sample or revisit other Doom-related experiences, consider these options:
- Back to Hell — expansions and mods that revive classic levels
- Doom 95 — older ports and legacy builds for nostalgia
- A demo/trial release to test the modern reboot before buying
