Put your ear to the test — Distance by Sound
Distance by Sound is an Android audio game that trains players to judge how far a sound source is using only what they hear. The core idea is simple: volume changes with distance, and your job is to translate what you hear into an accurate distance estimate. The interface is intentionally uncluttered so the audio cues remain the primary focus.
How the gameplay unfolds
- Target tones are played at random loudness levels and you must estimate how far away the source is.
- You begin each session by listening to two reference tones recorded at fixed distances (typically 1 m and 10 m) to calibrate your perception.
- Use a sliding control to set your distance guess; the game scores you higher the closer your estimate is to the actual distance.
- Rounds reward precision, encouraging repeated play to sharpen your auditory judgment.
Match formats
- Local head-to-head: play against a friend on the same device for direct competitive rounds.
- Solo practice: work through repeated trials on your own to improve accuracy and chase higher scores.
Real-world acoustics and focused presentation
The game models sound attenuation using standard physical behavior (the change in intensity with distance), so results feel grounded in real acoustic principles. The visual design is minimal and built with Jetpack Compose, keeping visual distractions low so players can concentrate on listening.
Immediate feedback and progression
After each guess the game provides instant feedback, letting you see how close you were and learn from each attempt. That fast loop of listen–guess–review helps players refine their internal sense of distance over time.
