DisplayCAL — graphical front end for Argyll CMS
Argyll CMS is a widely used open-source toolkit for display calibration, profiling and color management. Developer Florian Hoch created a user-friendly graphical interface around Argyll CMS, resulting in DisplayCAL. The GUI simplifies access to the underlying engine while exposing advanced options for accurate monitor setup and profiling.
Core capabilities
- Produce tailored test charts and measurement patterns for creating precise display profiles.
- Calibrate and profile multiple screens in one workflow for consistent multi-display setups.
- Output ICC profiles that use look-up tables (LUTs) with optional gamut mapping when needed.
- Adjust target white point, set specific luminance goals, and define custom tone-response curves.
- Measure and characterize a wide variety of display types and technologies.
Advanced settings and workflow notes
DisplayCAL exposes many detailed controls for experienced users while remaining approachable for newcomers. Typical features include step-by-step calibration and profiling, LUT-based profile generation, and the ability to save and reuse measurement sequences. The tool also supports creating and editing custom test charts to accommodate unusual devices or specialized workflows.
