Quick overview
Desktop Timer is a free, lightweight stopwatch-style utility from Desktop Clocks that provides a single desktop timer. It does one job — count down — and does that with a minimal interface and low resource usage.
Getting started
When you open the program a compact window appears where you enter hours, minutes, and seconds for your countdown. Controls are straightforward:
- Start begins the countdown.
- Reset clears the current time so you can enter a new duration.
- Hide removes the window from the taskbar; restore it with the Show Desktop Timer entry in the system tray context menu.
There is also a Test Sound option to preview the alert tone.
Additional menu items and issues
The app shows options to load a custom sound and to access online help, but both of those buttons redirect to the same free-domain webpage that contains no useful content. In short, the customization and help links are effectively nonfunctional.
Limitations compared to Windows Alarms & Clock
Desktop Timer is intentionally minimal, but that means several common features are missing:
- You can only set one countdown at a time; there is no way to queue multiple timers.
- There are no alarm, stopwatch, or world-clock features — just the digital countdown.
- The optional menu links (load sound, online help) do not lead to meaningful resources.
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Extremely simple and easy to use.
- Small footprint and low resource consumption.
Cons:
- Limited to a single basic timer with no extra clock functions.
- Menu links lead to a parked/free domain and do not provide help or sound files.
Recommendation
If you need a single, no-frills desktop countdown and prefer a tiny app with a straightforward interface, Desktop Timer will do the job. If you require multiple timers, alarms, world clocks, or reliable help and customization links, consider a more fully featured clock application instead.
