Game snapshot
Descenders is an adrenaline-driven downhill mountain biking title that puts you on a bike and hurtling down procedurous runs. You ride through meadows, forests and jump-strewn tracks in either first- or third-person view, aiming to finish a run and ultimately tackle a massive “boss” course that ends with a huge mega-jump. Each run is built on procedural generation, so the layouts change every time you play.
How you approach a run is flexible: charge straight for the boss to finish quickly, or take side routes to rack up rep (the game’s XP) and earn more health. Signing with sponsors unlocks exclusive events, leaderboard competition and cosmetic rewards. The game uses a roguelike-style progression — crashing can send you back toward the start — but there are checkpoints along routes that serve as respawn points after a bailout. Crashes cost both health and rep, and abandoning a run before the boss also results in a rep penalty.
Recommended alternative — SNØ: Ultimate Freeriding (paid)
SNØ is a paid option worth considering if you like freeride-focused bike games. Its controls are reminiscent of a skateboarding sim, and it gives you route choices: take the simple line to reach the boss quickly or follow a longer path to earn extra rep. Like Descenders, it uses a roguelike twist that penalizes crashes by setting you back to an earlier point.
Mischief Tour — new additions
The Mischief Tour update adds eight new challenges, each granting unique gear when completed. Highlights include:
- A scavenger-hunt-style mission that winds you through the park’s tight turns and hidden corners.
- Snowman’s Ball, a wintery map filled with icy obstacles and narrow passages.
- The Lost Cause Caves, an atmospheric underground area full of striking lighting and colorful rock formations.
Complete these missions to collect fresh items and diversify your runs.
Big Air Compound — expansion highlights
Inspired in part by Matt Macduff’s real-world performances at the Big Air Compound, this expansion brings new bikes, maps and customization features. It also introduces additional missions and a larger “Grand Tour” experience where you can sample everything in one sequence.
New trails to try in this update include:
- BIKEOUT 5 — an extra-challenging course designed for advanced tricks and hazards
- GRASSHOPPER DH — a twisty, technical downhill route built for fast reactions
- UTAH TRAILS — steep, intense descents with high-speed sections and dramatic drops
Alongside these tracks you’ll find new bike types and enhanced cosmetic options to tailor your ride.
Final thoughts — strengths and limitations
Descenders is a brutal, fast, stunt-oriented ride that rewards skill and risk-taking. Its core gameplay is deliberately straightforward and satisfying: fluid handling, weighty physics, and eye-catching environments. The procedurally generated levels keep things fresh, but that same randomness makes mastery difficult — you rarely see the exact same challenge twice, and learning a single course by heart is rarely possible.
If you enjoy repeated, high-stakes runs where bailing is costly and every jump matters, Descenders delivers. If you prefer fixed tracks you can memorize and perfect, the variability may be frustrating.
