Game Snapshot
Demonschool is a premium role-playing strategy title set on a strange island university. You step into the role of Faye, an heir of demon hunters, and join a motley crew of classmates as you live campus life while confronting nightmarish beings. The game is a single-player experience from Necrosoft Games, the studio behind the puzzle hit Gunhouse.
How the combat works
Movement is integral to every turn: choosing a character and a direction causes them to interact automatically with whatever lies along their path. Matches play out as tactical, turn-based encounters with a planning phase that allows you to undo moves before committing. There’s no time pressure during planning, so you can take your time to combine positions and abilities for maximum effect.
Characters, classes, and relationships
You begin as Faye and soon recruit eccentric but powerful allies such as Namako, Destin, and Knute, each with distinct classes and movement quirks. Beyond the core party, there are around fifteen notable characters you can befriend and deepen relationships with. Because the game takes place at a university, you’ll also make academic choices — picking a field of study and scheduling classes that improve your team’s skills and tactics.
Fire mechanics and status effects
A signature system centers on fire and burning. Flames spread through proximity and interaction: a flaming attack ignites targets and nearby units can catch fire on the following turn, potentially turning large swathes of the battlefield into infernos. Gore is common during combat, so expect graphic depictions in violent exchanges.
Other status conditions include:
- Possessed
- Tethered
- Doomed
- Stun
- Poison
In addition to status effects, characters are customized through equippable techniques rather than a purely stat-driven level-up tree. This lets you tailor abilities to create distinctive synergies and experiment with varied tactical builds.
Visuals, tone, and sound
The game visually shifts between 2D and 3D presentation, creating a striking and fluid environment. A lot of the art direction draws on the unsettling mood of Italian horror films from the 1960s and 1970s, resulting in strange, grotesque imagery paired with an offbeat soundtrack that enhances the unsettling campus atmosphere.
Verdict
If you enjoy methodical, modern takes on tactical RPGs with strong aesthetic identity and character-driven school life systems, Demonschool delivers a focused single-player experience with inventive mechanics and deep customization.
