Overview and purpose

Deeper is a lightweight customization utility for macOS from the same developer who created Onyx. While Onyx focuses on maintenance and deep system optimization, Deeper concentrates on exposing hidden visual and behavioral options so you can tweak your Mac’s appearance and a few functional defaults.

What you can adjust

  • Modify Finder visual behavior, including spacing and zoom effects for icons
  • Configure which items are visible in Finder menus
  • Control how many entries Safari keeps in its history and decide whether PDFs should open directly in the browser
  • Enable or disable caches automatically to troubleshoot or force fresh content
  • Reveal Debug menus for various Apple apps and services (examples: Terminal, Spotlight, Address Book)

Interface and organization

Deeper’s interface is organized into clear sections that group related tweaks together, making it easy to find what you want to change. The app exposes many commonly hidden preferences in a simple, tabbed layout so you can switch between categories and apply settings without digging through Terminal commands.

Limitations to be aware of

  • Browser-related options are focused on Safari and do not extend to alternative browsers
  • Some modules, such as Dashboard and Exposé controls, offer only a small number of tweaks compared with the greater flexibility available in Onyx
  • While Deeper can surface debug options for many components, the depth of control varies by area — some features are extensive, others are intentionally minimal

Recommendation

If you already use Onyx for system maintenance, you may find Deeper redundant for some tasks. However, if your goal is to quickly change hidden UI and app preferences without installing the full Onyx toolkit, Deeper is a convenient, user-friendly choice.
