Setting and premise
Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines is a World War II tactical title that puts you in command of a small elite unit. Each operation asks you to accomplish specific objectives—often under heavy enemy presence—by making careful use of your team's varied capabilities.
How the game plays
The action unfolds in real time from an isometric vantage, with the entire level visible so you can plan routes and coordinate moves. Because the game does not pause between actions, you must think ahead and act quickly to carry out complex maneuvers and synchronize your squad.
The squad and their roles
You control a six-person commando team, and every member brings a different specialty to the mission. Success depends on using each specialist at the right moment rather than trying to have everyone do the same thing.
- Sabotage and demolition tasks rely on the explosives expert.
- Sniper and assassination duties fall to the marksman and stealth-focused operatives.
- Stealthy movement and evasion are best handled by scouts and infiltrators.
- Rescue and extraction operations require coordination from several team members.
Tactics and mission objectives
Missions include a variety of goals, and they reward careful planning and patient execution. Common objectives you’ll encounter include:
- Freeing or escorting allied personnel from hostile zones.
- Neutralizing enemy weapon emplacements and supply points.
- Eliminating high-value targets using silent methods.
- Bypassing or avoiding patrols to remain undetected.
Avoiding detection is usually preferable to open combat: killing guards can be effective, but being spotted generally ruins long-term plans and forces a restart.
Difficulty, learning curve, and replay value
The game is challenging and often requires trial and error to discover the most reliable approach. Completing a mission can be highly satisfying, but many levels have one or a very small number of viable solutions. As a result, replaying the same mission after you’ve solved it rarely offers significantly different experiences.
Quick tips for success
- Observe patrol patterns before committing to a route.
- Use each commando’s specialty instead of forcing one unit to handle every task.
- Favor non-lethal, silent methods to preserve your plan.
- Save your progress frequently (where the game allows) to reduce frustration from failed attempts.
