Overview

ShockWave is a fan-made modification for the real-time strategy expansion Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour. Widely praised by the community, the mod won Mod DB’s Editor’s Choice Award in 2008. Its primary aim is to broaden strategic options and increase variation among the generals while remaining faithful to the original game’s tone and storyline.

Purpose and design goals

The mod was created to give players more meaningful choices when selecting a general and to restore concepts that were intended for Zero Hour but were never included in the retail release. ShockWave adds new tactical depth without completely overhauling the game’s core narrative or feel, making it more of a partial conversion than a total remake.

Major new content

  • Three additional boss generals with full personalities and voice lines: Deathstrike, Ironside, and Leang, each reworked to use distinct tactics rather than relying solely on their faction’s typical units.
  • Additional playable missions featuring generals Fai and Juhziz, who were absent from Zero Hour’s final retail build.
  • Redesigned boss encounters (General’s Challenge) so that the new boss generals have unique behaviors, taunts, and audio.

Gameplay expansions and audiovisual updates

  • Over a hundred freshly introduced units and a large number of new buildings and structures that expand build diversity.
  • Custom soundtrack elements and brand-new in-game sound effects paired with improved weapon visuals and special effects.
  • Numerous gameplay balance tweaks aimed at increasing strategic variety and making different general choices feel distinct.

Mod approach, stability, and compatibility

ShockWave is implemented as a partial conversion: it adds substantial new elements but preserves the original backstory and general gameplay rhythm. It behaves more like an expansion pack than a fully rewritten game and does not require modification of Zero Hour’s hardcoded executables. While it is considered one of the more stable community mods for Zero Hour, users may still encounter occasional bugs or rough edges that the development team continues to address.

How it compares to the original vision

Many of the upgrades, units, and structures missing from the shipped version of Zero Hour are present in ShockWave in some form. The mod often feels like the version the original developers might have released had there been more development time—restoring intended features and adding new strategic options.

Alternate recommendation

If you’re looking for another fan project with an emphasis on expanded general choices and refreshed content, Command & Conquer: Generals – Return Mod is a worthy alternative to try.
