Quick summary
Cobian Backup is a free, practical tool that automates file backups so you don’t have to remember to do them manually. It can run either as a regular program or as a system service, and is designed to be unobtrusive while maintaining reliable copies of your data.
Key characteristics
- Runs quietly in the background with minimal impact on system resources.
- Can operate as both a user application and a background service.
- Performs scheduled, automatic backups so tasks aren’t left to memory.
- Offers optional encryption and limited compression when smaller or protected archives are needed.
- Large single-file transfers (roughly over 1 GB) may cause noticeable slowdown while they complete.
How it copies files
By default Cobian creates exact copies of files and folders at the destination to avoid corruption. If you need to save space or protect data, it also provides compression and strong encryption options, although its compression choices are limited compared with some dedicated archivers. If you plan to back up very large files regularly, be sure you have sufficient storage on the backup target.
Performance notes
The program is lightweight and usually won’t interfere with other activities on your PC. For routine or incremental backups it runs quickly and discreetly. However, when copying very large files, you may experience some lag while the transfer is in progress.
What’s new in this release
The principal addition in this version is support for executing command-line expressions, allowing scripts or custom commands to run as part of backup tasks.
