Overview of Samsung ChatON

Samsung ChatON was a messaging application from Samsung that combined text chats with social features and voice/video calling. It offered free messaging between users and bundled extras such as a personal activity feed, media sharing, and in-app translation tools.

Getting set up

• Create a profile using either your phone number or your Samsung account.
• The app connects to your contacts and lists people already using ChatON so you can begin conversations immediately.
• Users could post short status updates (limited to 140 characters) on a personal wall where contacts could leave comments.

Notable capabilities

• Broadcast a single message to many recipients at once — support reached up to 1,000 contacts.
• Make VoIP and video calls directly from the app.
• Share photos, videos, audio clips and your geographic location with chat partners.
• Apply custom chat backgrounds, use a variety of emoticons and add unique sticker art to messages.
• Translate incoming messages to help when friends write in different languages.
• Retract sent messages if you need to cancel something sent in error.

Design and usability

The interface was tidy and intuitive, resembling familiar instant-messaging layouts to make adoption fast for new users. It combined the quick back-and-forth of chat apps with a mini social feed for those who wanted more than one-to-one messaging.
