Overview
CandyBar is a macOS utility for managing and swapping app and system icons. It provides an organized way to collect icon sets, replace individual icons with drag-and-drop, and preview them before applying changes. The app is now distributed at no cost, but active development has effectively ended — only occasional minor fixes may be released.
Core capabilities
- Drag icons from your files into the app to swap them quickly and visually.
- Browse collections and individual items inside a dark, semi-transparent preview area; use the on-screen slider to zoom in or out.
- Store and manage icon libraries with the built-in organizer (previously known as Pixadex), which functions similarly to an image library for icons.
- Supports high-resolution icons (up to 512 × 512) and integrates with Quick Look for fast previews.
Compatibility and important limits
- macOS 10.8 (Mountain Lion): CandyBar can update the new system icon set — open the app and press the large “Update” button to fetch the latest IconData.
- Dock appearance: Due to changes in how Mountain Lion renders the Dock, CandyBar can no longer change the Dock’s overall visual style. It can still modify indicator lights for running apps.
- Mac App Store apps: CandyBar cannot alter internal icons of Mac App Store–signed applications because of code signing protections.
- Future status: Because CandyBar modifies files on disk to apply custom icons, its ability to change system graphics may be further restricted by future macOS updates.
Interface and workflow
- Icons are displayed in a transparent preview pane where you can inspect them at various zoom levels.
- You can create "smart" lists and drag whole sets or single icons into place.
- Replacing an icon is as simple as dragging the replacement image into the target slot.
- The integrated icon organizer lets you catalog and retrieve your collections from the same app you use to apply them.
Availability, activation, and support
- CandyBar is free to download and use; however, long-term support is minimal.
- Provided activation key: PPQA-YAMA-E3KP-VHXG-B6AL-L
- Documentation is limited — new users unfamiliar with icon management may need to rely on community tutorials or trial-and-error.
Other options worth considering
- Panic (developers of Transmit and Unison) — trusted macOS software creators with other useful utilities.
- The Iconfactory — well known for producing high-quality icon artwork and related tools.
- Xender — a separate tool focused on file and media transfer rather than icon management; included here as an alternative solution depending on your needs.
Closing notes
CandyBar remains a useful tool for organizing and applying custom icons on macOS, particularly for users who already have icon collections. Keep in mind its limitations on newer macOS releases and the small chance future system updates will further restrict what it can change. Further release details and updates can be found through the developer’s site.
