Brief overview
BISS (Browser Independent Signing Service) is a utility for applying and managing Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) on government web services. It works without relying on specific web browsers or legacy plug-ins such as Java applets or ActiveX controls, letting users sign documents and authenticate to portals in a browser-agnostic way.
Supported platforms
- macOS Catalina
- Ubuntu LTS (Linux)
- Windows 10
- Windows 8
How it connects to signing credentials
The application communicates with QES certificates stored on hardware tokens or smart cards by using the host platform’s cryptographic interfaces—either Microsoft CryptoAPI on Windows or a PKCS#11 provider on other systems. This approach ensures private keys remain on the card while the workstation requests signature operations securely.
Deployment and permissions
BISS is installed locally on each workstation and requires administrator privileges for setup. Once installed, it provides a consistent signing experience across different browsers and operating systems without additional client-side plug-ins.
