Overview
YouTube is the largest video platform worldwide and for good reason: its streaming is fast and video quality is excellent. Still, the official YouTube app has limitations—one common complaint is that playback stops when you switch to another app. BG Player is a third‑party app built to let you continue listening to YouTube content while using other apps.
How BG Player handles background playback
Instead of altering YouTube itself, BG Player provides its own interface that streams YouTube videos. Playback quality and buffering performance are comparable to the official app, but the experience is delivered inside BG Player’s lightweight client. Because it accesses YouTube content through its own player, you can keep audio running while performing other tasks on your device.
Layout and basic controls
BG Player uses a clean white layout organized into five main sections. These are presented as tabs at the bottom of the screen:
- Player
- Playlists
- Stories
- Search
- History
The app’s media controls are intentionally simple and lean toward audio use rather than full video management. Some standard YouTube features are missing, including the ability to adjust resolution, enable captions, add subtitles, or file complaints about a video. Instead of a detailed description panel below each video, BG Player shows a queue of related tracks and videos.
Common playback buttons emphasize listening convenience:
- Sleep timer
- Lyrics lookup
Music-oriented functionality
BG Player’s standout addition is its music discovery tab, branded as Music Stories. At the bottom of the interface you’ll find genre buttons; tapping one builds a playlist of tracks from that genre and immediately begins playback in the app’s audio player. It’s a quick way to generate genre‑based listening sessions without manual curation.
Limitations and conclusion
BG Player succeeds at its core task: keeping YouTube audio playing in the background. However, it lacks several expected features—most notably it does not support playback from the lock screen, and it omits many of YouTube’s advanced video tools. If you want curated music libraries and robust playlist management, a dedicated streaming service like Spotify may be a better fit. In short, BG Player is useful for background listening, but it’s relatively modest in scope beyond that.
