What Betaflight does and why you need the Configurator

Betaflight is flight controller firmware aimed at maximizing flight performance, adding new features quickly, and supporting many hardware targets. The Configurator is the companion app you use to change settings, tune behavior, and load or verify firmware so your aircraft flies as intended.

Initial setup steps

1. Install Betaflight Configurator on your computer.
2. Physically connect the flight controller (FC) to the computer via USB.
3. The configurator will detect and power the FC; a new COM port should appear.
4. Select that COM port in the app and click Connect.

After connecting, the app displays a setup view with basic telemetry and controls. Use the Calibrate Accelerometer command to level the virtual 3D model to match the real craft’s orientation.

Configuring ports and peripherals

To attach external devices (GPS, serial peripherals, telemetry radios, etc.) use the Ports page. That section contains the settings for assigning UARTs and enabling external hardware connected to the FC.

If you’re unsure about advanced filters or features, leaving them at stock values is safe — the quad will still fly.

• Arm and disarm behavior, beeper activation, Angle mode and Air mode are configured in the Modes section.
• Some entries are event triggers or auxiliary features rather than pure flight modes.
• Properly assigning and testing modes helps prevent sudden pitch changes, improves post‑crash recovery, and makes behavior more predictable when throttling.
