Quick overview
Bejeweled is a landmark gem-matching puzzle first released by PopCap in 2001. Its bright visuals and easy-to-grasp mechanics helped it spawn many imitators and established PopCap as a major player in casual gaming.
Core mechanics
How the game plays — in plain terms:
- Cascades are central: a strong move can trigger a series of automatic matches as new gems fall into empty spaces, producing extra points.
- You control the board by swapping two adjacent gems; only swaps that create matches are allowed.
- When three or more identical gems line up, they vanish and are replaced by gems dropping from above.
- The match-and-refill cycle is the repeating loop that keeps each round moving.
Game modes and time rules
Two main ways to play:
- Time Trial: a faster-paced variant where a meter steadily decreases; if it runs out the session ends.
- Untimed / Classic: a relaxed pace where the progress meter only fills from successful matches and doesn't drain with time.
In both modes, filling the bottom progress meter to its limit will end the round, and the game also finishes if no legal moves remain.
Why it stuck around
Bejeweled's lasting appeal comes from its immediate accessibility and satisfying feedback: colorful gems, simple controls, and the thrill of combo chains. That straightforward design made it a staple of casual gaming and introduced millions to match-three puzzling.
