Overview of the ASUS touchpad utility
ASUS Smart Gesture is a no-cost touchpad driver designed for ASUS laptops to unlock multi-touch features and customizable gestures. The software runs on 32- and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows, and many Windows 10 systems already include a version of the app preinstalled. ASUS publishes the utility for use only on its own hardware.
What the driver enables
The package brings laptop trackpads closer to the multi-finger interactions common on other platforms (such as macOS and modern Windows devices). After installing it, you can configure gestures for different finger counts to perform actions like clicking, dragging, scrolling, zooming, rotating, and launching system shortcuts. While the driver expands functionality, some users report occasional lag or inconsistent recognition of gestures.
Opening and navigating the settings window
When you open the Smart Gesture control panel (for example from Device Manager), the top menu presents three main sections:
- Mobile Control
- Mouse Detection
- Gesture
Inside the main Gesture section, you’ll see an animation or illustration next to grouped options for different finger counts. Each group can be enabled or disabled and tailored to your preference.
Per-finger options and actions
The interface divides gestures by how many fingers you use. You can toggle individual actions on or off; below are the typical capabilities, shown in a different order than in the app:
- Three- and Four-Finger controls
- Switch browser pages or desktop items
- Open Task View
- Show notifications
-
Launch voice assistant (Cortana)
-
Two-Finger controls
- Rotate (clockwise / counterclockwise)
- Zoom (pinch open / pinch close)
- Scroll (with a preference for same or reversed direction)
-
Show pop-up menu (two-finger tap)
-
One-Finger controls
- Drag (double touch while holding, then move)
- Activate (double tap)
- Select (single tap)
At the bottom of the Gesture panel you’ll typically find action buttons; their order is often presented as:
- Apply
- Cancel
- OK
- Reset to defaults
Use these to save or discard changes, or to revert all settings back to the original configuration.
Mouse Detection tab
The Mouse Detection option lets the touchpad automatically disable itself when an external pointing device (USB or Bluetooth mouse) is connected. If you don’t enable this, you can still manually disable the touchpad when attaching a mouse.
Mobile Control tab
If you install ASUS’s Remote Link app on an Android phone or tablet, the Mobile Control tab lets you enable a server that allows your mobile device to act as a remote input over Wi‑Fi or Bluetooth. From this area you can turn on the server, restart it, or suppress the reminder notification that prompts pairing with Remote Link.
Alternatives and downloads
A commonly suggested alternative is the Synaptics touchpad driver, which also provides configurable scrolling, pointing, and tapping behavior. Both Synaptics and ASUS drivers are available at no cost. To get the latest Smart Gesture release, visit ASUS’s official support site and search for drivers for your specific laptop model.
Tips, limitations, and support
- Personalization: Install the driver to access one-, two-, three-, and four-finger gestures (rotate, scroll, zoom, etc.) and tune them to your workflow.
- Updates: ASUS does not always issue frequent driver updates for all models; check your device’s support page for the latest packages.
- Troubleshooting: If gestures behave erratically, try reinstalling the driver, checking for OS updates, or switching to an alternative driver such as Synaptics.
- Documentation and policies: For additional information or questions about usage and privacy, consult the support, press, and privacy pages on ASUS’s website.
