Game snapshot

ASTRONEER is a science-fiction survival title developed by System Era Softworks. Players explore alien planets, harvest unfamiliar materials, and design everything from base modules to personalized spacecraft. The core loop blends resource collection, crafting, and planetary travel across procedurally generated worlds.

Getting started: suits, air, and basic objectives

At the beginning you choose a spacesuit and are deployed to a randomly generated planet. You start with a modest set of tools and a limited supply of materials. Your life support is tied to a basecamp: oxygen refills at the tethered base, while a personal tank supplies air when you wander away. To progress you must leave the base to forage and return before your reserves run out.

Terrain manipulation and resource harvesting

The game’s signature mechanic is its Terrain Tool, which acts like a suction-and-shape device for the surface. The tool offers three distinct modes:

  • Flatten — smooths or compresses lifted material to form level ground or ramps.
  • Excavate — collects soil and loose deposits into the tool’s storage.
  • Elevate — uses stored material to build up terrain or fill gaps.

You can sculpt tunnels, bridges, shelters, and landmarks, but physics still matters: unsupported roofs can collapse and uneven ground affects movement. Softer deposits (like clay) are simple to harvest by hand; denser rock requires heavier equipment. Valuable resources appear in both soft and hard deposits, and biomes come in a wide range of color palettes—reportedly dozens of variations. Upgrading a Terrain Analyzer lets you inspect and identify soils and minerals before committing them to a build.

Crafting, stations, and transport

Collected materials can be combined and processed into advanced components. Some resources—air, for example—need specialized infrastructure such as an Atmospheric Condenser. New materials must be analyzed before they can be used in recipes. As inventory fills, you can mount cargo on vehicles to free up suit storage. Once you’ve assembled the required modules and a capable craft, you can launch to a different world in search of fresh resources and biomes.

Living, hazards, and consequences

Planets are alive with environmental challenges that demand attention and planning. Threats include:

  • Radiation spikes that can damage health and equipment.
  • Burrowing alien creatures that emerge unexpectedly.
  • Corrosive or acidic zones that eat away at structures and suits.
  • Intense storms that reduce visibility and interfere with travel.

Death is punishing: when you die you drop carried items and respawn at your basecamp without the lost tools and materials, so risk management and safe retreats are important.

Tone and exploration

Unlike survival titles that emphasize dread and horror, this game leans toward a stylized, cartoony aesthetic with a surreal edge. Discovery feels playful—strange plant life, unusual resource shapes (from geometric chunks to crystalline shards and obscure canisters), and curious planetary features encourage curiosity and experimentation rather than fear.

Alternate suggestion

If you’re looking for a paid title with a similar exploratory focus, consider Glitchwalkers as an alternative experience that emphasizes different mechanics and world-building.
