Overview: why ArriveCAN matters for Canada trips
ArriveCAN is a free digital tool designed to collect required traveler information for entry into Canada. It lets you upload contact details and travel documents that Canadian authorities request before and after arrival. Introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to help limit viral spread and manage imported cases, the app can also shorten processing time at ports of entry.
If you use other trip-management tools, consider these alternatives:
- Google Trips
- TripAdvisor
- TripIt
Who needs to submit — and when
All travelers arriving in Canada by air, land, or sea are expected to use ArriveCAN and complete the necessary fields. Submissions must be made no later than 72 hours before your scheduled arrival. Failure to provide the required information on time can result in denied boarding or refusal of entry, particularly for foreign nationals.
Certain categories of travelers may still be permitted to enter but could face enforcement actions, fines, or delays:
- Foreign nationals admitted under specific exemptions (for example, those entering for work, study, or compassionate reasons)
- Individuals registered under the Indian Act
- Canadian permanent residents
- Canadian citizens
Information you will be asked to provide
When completing an ArriveCAN submission, be prepared to supply the following items:
- Proof of vaccination status
- Results of any required pre-entry COVID-19 test
- Your quarantine or self-isolation plan, if applicable
- Contact information and travel document details
- Details for multiple travelers in a single submission, if you’re traveling together
- Information submitted on behalf of someone who is unable to complete the form themselves
After you submit: what to expect at arrival
Once your submission is accepted, you will receive an email receipt confirming that you provided the requested information. This receipt is evidence of submission only — it does not guarantee eligibility to enter Canada, confirm vaccination validity, or confirm any special travel status.
Present the ArriveCAN receipt when you arrive to help speed up processing at the border. The app is intended to streamline checks and support public-health requirements during travel.
