Quick Summary

Walking With The Dinosaurs ARK: Survival Evolved is an open-world survival title from Studio Wildcard where players contend with prehistoric environments and creatures. You harvest resources, construct shelters and equipment, tame (or hunt) beasts, and ultimately attempt to beat the game's boss encounters.

A Larger, More Complex World

The ARK experience has expanded significantly since its early days. New content includes:

  • A wider assortment of craftable tools, structures, and advanced machinery
  • More distinct biomes and points of interest to explore
  • Additional creature types and resources to collect
  • New boss encounters and long-term objectives for late-game play

Despite these additions, the core loop—traveling between biomes, gathering materials, and fashioning shelter, weapons, and utilities—remains the foundation of survival. Periodically, supply beacons activate and drop loot crates for a short time, offering valuable rewards. The ultimate endgame is conquering boss arenas by offering required tributes at Obelisks or Beacons to open portals to those fights.

Creatures: More Than Just Dinosaurs

ARK’s fauna goes far beyond classic dinosaurs. Creature categories now include:

  • Titans, Tek, Mechanical, and other high-tier classifications
  • Fantasy, Enraged, Alpha, and Corrupted variants
  • Aberrant specimens and other unusual forms

Taming and acquisition vary by type:

  • Large organic predators (for example: Rex, Sabertooth, Dodo) typically require tranquillizers and repeated feeding until domesticated.
  • Futuristic or mechanical allies (for example: Scout, Tek units, Enforcer) need specific high-tech blueprints or components to summon or assemble.
  • Many major bosses are not tamable (for example: Overseer, Dragon, Megapithecus, Broodmother Lysrix), though a few Titans can be freed by destroying corruption nodes.
  • Limited-time event creatures are often unobtainable outside of specific in-game events.

The game also features a day/night cycle that influences creature behavior: nocturnal species become more active and aggressive at night, while diurnal animals rest.

Staying Alive and Getting Stronger

Survival requires managing multiple threats and resources. Players and their tames can perish from wounds, hostile players or beasts, drowning, starvation, and extreme temperatures. Key ways to gain levels include:

  • Finding explorer notes and other collectibles
  • Crafting advanced tools and equipment
  • Harvesting resources across the map
  • Engaging in combat and taming creatures

Gaining levels improves character capabilities such as:

  • Increasing movement speed and overall mobility
  • Unlocking better crafting options and efficiencies
  • Expanding carry capacity to haul more gear
  • Extending underwater breath and survivability
  • Boosting hydration and stamina, and dealing greater damage
  • Raising base toughness and health

Tamed creatures have their own upgrade paths. For instance:

  • Meks can be reinforced with heavier armor and stronger weapon systems
  • Wyverns can be bred or enhanced to carry larger loads and deliver more powerful attacks
  • Glowbugs can be developed to emit stronger light for use as mobile illumination

Stronger, better-equipped mounts and machines greatly improve your chances against the toughest bosses.

Multiplayer, Tribes, and Endgame Challenges

ARK supports solo play and multiplayer servers. In online play, players can:

  • Create tribes and recruit others for cooperative play
  • Coordinate base-building, resource gathering, and boss fights

Boss arenas require players to submit specific artifacts to an Obelisk or Beacon to summon the boss. Defeating these bosses and clearing their arenas is the primary route to closing the loop on the game’s main objectives.

Why It Appeals

The blend of primeval wildlife and advanced technology—riding dinosaurs one moment and facing robotic foes the next—gives ARK a distinctive, often surprising appeal. Starting with rudimentary tools and gradually crafting futuristic gear keeps progression satisfying, and few experiences match the thrill of mounted combat atop a dinosaur against massive, otherworldly opponents.
