Overview

Application Wizard provides a centralized way to control and access apps on your Mac. It speeds up opening, closing and switching between programs, and offers an expandable menu that lets you scan your installed applications at a glance. You can assemble app groups for specific workflows and mark favorites for quick access.

The interface is mostly transparent and designed to be low-profile, which helps it blend into your desktop. When you close the main window, the tool remains available as a compact panel in the menu bar (and you can place that panel elsewhere on the screen). It can also display files, drives and free/used disk space, and you can preview images and documents directly from the menu.

Main capabilities

  • Create and launch collections of applications tailored to different tasks.
  • Rapidly open, quit, or switch between apps in a few seconds.
  • Configure app behaviors, such as auto-launch at startup or quitting background-only programs.
  • Browse every installed app through the menu’s expandable view.
  • Use quick previews for files and images without opening a separate app.
  • Keep a small, repositionable panel in the menu bar for one-click access.

How it compares to the Finder and Dock

Application Wizard can act as a compact alternative to parts of the Dock and Finder by listing applications, documents and mounted volumes in one place. It adds a different navigation model than the system’s default—some features overlap with newer macOS releases, but Wizard’s menu-based approach organizes content in a single, searchable spot.

Usability notes

The design is elegant and unobtrusive for most users, though some interface elements aren’t immediately obvious—certain status lights and indicators can be unclear until you learn their meanings. Overall it provides a faster, more centralized way to handle application and file access.

Recent updates and fixes

  • Several minor bugs were corrected and a number of small enhancements were implemented.
  • Fixed an issue (introduced in version 2.4) that prevented non-bundled apps from appearing in the Applications panel.
  • Resolved a version 2.4 bug that hid the Classic Applications Folder and Classic Start/Stop/Restart commands from the Open and Special menus when Classic was present.
  • Added options to control where popup menus appear when invoked by hot keys: at the pointer, in a screen corner, or centered.
  • You can now assign custom keyboard shortcuts for frequent actions.
  • Single-application mode now supports temporarily showing multiple applications together for combined use.
  • A new "Switch to Previous" command is available in the Switch menu for faster toggling.
  • You can disable file previews for items on shared machines or network file servers.
  • Opening and resolving aliases from the Special menu has been improved.
  • The iPhoto Library submenu has been updated to fix incompatibilities with iPhoto ’09 and to let you preview how published albums appear online.
  • The Aperture Library submenu now includes full support for Aperture 3.
  • Activity Monitor has been added to the System Memory submenu so you can quickly inspect running processes and memory usage.
  • On macOS 10.5 and later, Recent Documents and Recent Servers can be added to the Special menu for quick access to files and network locations.
  • The Special menu now lets you choose which types of volumes are visible and provides eject/mount controls for disks, partitions and servers.

Alternatives

If you prefer a different approach, consider lightweight utility apps like CheatSheet for quick shortcut reminders or other menu-based launchers that emphasize keyboard-driven navigation.
