Overview
When a hard drive is badly damaged and Windows can no longer boot, Apple’s Boot Camp Support Software can help restore a fresh, working installation instead of performing a factory reset. It lets Mac users reinstall a clean 64-bit copy of Windows and the necessary drivers to run that OS on Apple hardware.
Compatible Windows Releases
This package provides support for 64-bit editions of the following Microsoft Windows releases:
- Windows 8.1
- Windows 8
- Windows 7
Appropriate Use Cases
- Recover a Windows installation whose partition table or system files have been corrupted.
- Reinstall Windows on a Mac that previously used Boot Camp without performing a full factory restore of macOS.
- Restore Windows drivers and utilities so that Apple hardware (trackpad, keyboard, graphics, networking) functions correctly under a fresh Windows install.
Note: The software is intended for use on Mac systems running Windows via Boot Camp, such as MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro machines.
File Size and Packaging
The support package is distributed as a ZIP archive. Because it is compressed, it typically requires less disk space to download and store than an uncompressed installer bundle.
Installation Guide
- Unzip the downloaded archive to a convenient folder.
- Launch the included setup program; an installation wizard will open and lead you through each step.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to reinstall Windows and the Boot Camp drivers.
- The installer attempts to detect which 64-bit Windows variant is present and will apply the appropriate files automatically.
If you encounter errors during installation, check disk integrity and backup important files before attempting another reinstall.
