Apex Legends is coming to phones — free and class-based
Respawn Entertainment has launched a limited beta for a mobile version of Apex Legends. The core concept remains: teams of three pick a pre-made character (a “Legend”) and use their unique kits to survive an intense battle royale. Pre-registration is open, and beta invites allow players to download and play at no cost.
Controls, camera options, and storefronts
A couple of important mobile-specific differences:
- The game lets you switch between first-person and third-person camera views, the latter added to mirror other big mobile shooters and to let you see your Legend’s outfit.
- Mobile Apex runs independently from console/PC accounts — there’s no cross-play or shared progression, and it uses its own in-app store.
- Matches are optimized for phones with touch controls and UI tuned for shorter, on-the-go sessions.
Match size, maps, and bot balance
The mobile build currently follows the familiar Apex structure with a few mobile-centric twists:
- Matches are set up as 19 three-player squads (60 total players), a size chosen to keep the majority of slots filled by human players rather than bots.
- At launch the playable map is World’s Edge; other classic maps such as King’s Canyon and Olympus are planned for later beta stages.
- The smaller player cap aims to reduce the number of AI opponents compared with 100-player BRs, which often include many bots.
Legends and ability system
Apex Legends Mobile includes the franchise’s original roster and preserves the three-ability format for each Legend. Each character has:
- An ultimate ability — powerful, game-changing tools available less frequently.
- A passive trait — always active or triggered automatically to augment playstyle.
- A basic (tactical) skill — a frequently usable ability for combat or mobility.
Seven founding Legends are available during the initial beta, and each retains a distinct role suited to squad-based play.
How it stacks up on mobile
Overall, Apex Legends Mobile aims to be a strong contender in the mobile battle royale space. It brings most of the console/PC features players expect while adapting camera and UI for handsets. The lack of cross-play/progression creates a level playing field between newcomers and veterans, though some fans may dislike the third-person option if they prefer the console/PC default.
Season 17 — Arsenal: quick overview
Season 17, named Arsenal, arrives with several major additions: a new Legend, a rebuilt practice range, and a full competitive overhaul. Map updates to World’s Edge are also part of the pack.
New Legend — Ballistic
Meet Ballistic, the newest Legend to enter the arena:
- A 63-year-old Thunderdome veteran with a hard-earned toolkit.
- Brings a “smart pistol” tactical among other signature abilities.
- Expected to introduce fresh tactical choices and veteran-focused playstyles.
Rebuilt practice area: Firing Range 2.0
The Firing Range has been expanded and modernized to help players train more effectively:
- Enhanced bots now engage in realistic combat rather than simple target practice.
- A new town-style environment with buildings creates situational shooting scenarios.
- Movement drills and a dedicated 1v1 pit are included for skill refinement.
- The overall area has been increased to offer more varied practice options.
Competitive changes: Ranked reimagined
Ranked play receives a major update designed to improve fairness and progression:
- The split system has been removed to streamline seasonal ranking.
- Ladder Points have been introduced to give clearer, trackable progression.
- A new matchmaking rating (MMR) underpins placements and match balance.
These adjustments aim to reduce things like teaming and cheating, and make climbing the ladder feel more consistent.
World’s Edge gets a facelift
World’s Edge has been refreshed with aesthetics and landmark updates:
- A new Apex Games museum and related exhibit spaces add lore and points of interest to the map.
- The former Fragment area has been transformed into a new location called Monument, featuring updated structures.
- Lighting and environmental polish brighten and clarify combat areas for improved visibility and atmosphere.
What to expect this season
Season 17 brings a mix of content for casual players and competitors alike: a character with a distinct veteran theme, a much-improved training ground, reworked ranked systems for more stable competitive play, and visual/map changes to keep matches fresh. If you’re testing the mobile beta, now’s a good time to try the new tools and see how Arsenal reshapes the game.
