What this utility does
Angry IP Scanner is a compact network discovery utility that probes a specified IP range and reports which hosts respond. It works across operating systems and will also enumerate open ports on discovered machines.
Free alternative to try
LanScan (no cost) is a solid option worth evaluating if you want a straightforward, no-frills scanner.
How discovered hosts appear in the interface
When a device answers a probe, its IP is shown immediately in the program window. With the proper privileges, you can then initiate further interactions directly from the interface.
Actions you can take on a discovered machine
- Start a Telnet session
- Send ICMP pings or other reachability checks
- Connect via FTP
- Open the host’s HTTP/HTTPS services in a browser
- Browse shared network folders
Types of information you can retrieve
- MAC address and related link-layer identifiers
- Workgroup or domain membership
- Hostname (computer name)
- Additional details such as open ports and other discovered attributes
