Quick snapshot
Among Us is a free multiplayer title from InnerSloth for groups of about 4–15 players. It’s widely played on Android (and other platforms) and works over the internet or via local Wi‑Fi. The setup is simple and social: a crew prepares a spacecraft for launch, but one or more hidden saboteurs are trying to eliminate the others before being discovered.
How a round plays out
- Rounds begin with crew members completing routine tasks and moving around the map; chat is typically disabled during this phase to preserve secrecy.
- When a body is found or an emergency meeting is called, all players can discuss and use text or voice chat to accuse, defend, and vote.
- Crewmates win by finishing all assigned tasks or by identifying and ejecting the impostor(s); impostor(s) win by reducing the crew to the same number as themselves or preventing task completion.
Crew vs. Saboteur: objectives and tools
As a crewmate, the game is mostly deduction and cooperation. You’ll rely on tools like the Admin grid and security cams to track movement and spot suspicious behavior.
If you’re chosen as the saboteur, your role is more about subterfuge. Successful impostors mix in with the crew, stage alibis, and use ship sabotage and door closures to create confusion. The impostor’s aims are twofold: quietly remove crew members and disrupt or delay task progress so the crew can’t complete their objective.
Safety and parental concerns
Content-wise the game uses stylized, cartoonish violence and centers on deception. It’s milder than many action titles, but the social nature raises typical online-safety issues:
- Public matches can include strangers from various age groups and backgrounds.
- In-chat features allow players to communicate with anyone in the lobby, so children may be exposed to inappropriate language or behavior.
- Parents who want to limit exposure should supervise play, join matches with known friends, or use private lobbies.
The Fungle — a tropical, fungal map
The Fungle is an exotic map featuring sandy shores, towering cliffs, and dense mushroom groves. Each area offers tactical possibilities: high ground increases visibility for crew members, while open stretches like the beach make it easier for impostors to isolate targets.
Notable map elements:
- Zip lines that speed traversal and unique ejection animations that give the map its own flavor.
- A special sabotage (Mushroom Mixup) that temporarily swaps players’ colors and cosmetics, creating a brief but effective cover for impostors to act.
- Cosmetic items with a fungal theme — hats, outfits, and pet designs — and a Fungle-themed Cosmicube available for 70 Stars.
Tasks on The Fungle include:
- Playing frisbee
- Roasting marshmallows
- Lifting weights
- Fishing
Lunar New Year bundle and zodiac items
To celebrate the Lunar New Year, a themed Cosmicube offers seasonal cosmetics and zodiac-specific unlocks (it recognizes regional variations such as the Vietnamese Year of the Cat). The pack includes nameplates, a Desolation of Skeld pet, and various headwear and visors inspired by the zodiac.
Examples of items in the pack (reordered here):
- Tiger Visor and Hissssssssss Visor (Snake)
- Bull Headed Hat (Ox) and Squeaky Clean Hat (Rat)
- Like Nyah? Hat (Cat) among other zodiac-themed pieces
The Lunar New Year Cosmicube is priced at 20 Stars and is available through May 8, 2024.
