Quick summary

Apple tightly controls which apps appear in the App Store, a policy many users appreciate because it helps maintain device security and a consistent user experience. However, some people find those limits too restrictive. Developer Riley Testut created an alternative distribution method called AltStore that lets users install apps outside Apple’s official storefront without jailbreaking their device.

What AltStore provides

AltStore is an alternate app-distribution system for iPhone and iPad that enables sideloading of apps. Rather than modifying the device’s firmware, it uses a developer-style signing method tied to a user’s Apple ID so apps can be installed and run without circumventing Apple’s operating system protections.

How it operates

  • AltStore requires a companion program (AltServer) on a computer to install and refresh apps over a local network.
  • The tool uses your own Apple account to sign apps, so the device treats them as personally installed rather than coming from an unknown source.
  • Apps must be refreshed periodically to remain valid; AltServer can handle that automatically when available on the same network.

Setup needs and technical notes

  • A desktop or laptop (Windows or macOS) with AltServer installed and running during initial installation.
  • The iOS device and the computer should be on the same Wi‑Fi network for installation and app refreshing.
  • An active Apple ID for signing apps and basic familiarity with firewall and network settings to allow AltServer to communicate with the device.

Note: AltServer does not need to run constantly for AltStore to function, but keeping it available simplifies automatic refreshes. Opening AltServer has no adverse effects on the device itself.

Benefits and limitations

Drawbacks

  • Requires a bit of technical setup and some knowledge of networking/firewall configuration.
  • Apps need periodic re-signing/refreshing, which can be inconvenient if automatic refresh is unavailable.

Advantages

  • No jailbreak is necessary, so the device’s core security model remains intact.
  • Gives users access to apps outside Apple’s curated selection, providing greater choice for developers and users.

Other options

  • Andy OS (free): a desktop-based alternative that can be useful for running apps in an emulator or testing outside the device.
  • Consider official TestFlight distribution or hosting enterprise-signed apps for other sanctioned ways to share software with users.
