Quick summary
FLV Downloader is a free utility for Windows that retrieves Flash Video (FLV) files from the web and converts them into more widely supported formats. A paid “Plus” edition adds features such as batch conversion and email support, but the no-cost version still handles the core tasks: download, convert and play.
Supported platforms
You can install the program on common Windows releases, including:
- Windows 10
- Windows 8
- Windows 7
- Windows Vista
- Windows XP
Note: The application is designed for Microsoft Windows desktops and some mobile Windows devices; there is no macOS or Linux release listed.
What an FLV file is and how to open one
FLV is the Flash Video container once commonly used by sites such as YouTube and Vimeo. Many modern media players like KMPlayer and VLC can play FLV files directly, but some classic players (for example, Windows Media Player without extra codecs) may not support the format. If your preferred player can’t open FLV, converting the file to a different format will let you play it normally.
Which formats it can produce
FLV Downloader can transcode FLV files into popular output types. Example targets include:
- MP4
- MP3
- AVI
- MOV
- WMV
- MPEG
- 3GP
You’ll find these options in the converter’s format selection menu.
Installing and choosing a version
The installer is lightweight and the basic edition does not require a subscription. After installation you can:
- Use the free edition for single downloads and conversions
- Upgrade to the paid Plus version for extras like simultaneous multi-file conversion and priority support
The Plus variant is sold on a renewable plan; the essential functions are available without payment.
Downloading videos from a site (YouTube example)
The app’s interface is simple and divided into three main areas:
- Tasks — monitor progress of ongoing downloads and conversions
- Convert — import local files and set output options
- Download — paste links or page source to grab online media
On the Download screen you’ll see fields to:
- Paste the video URL and optionally mark “audio-only” or “playlist” when applicable
- Pick the download quality (options range from low/standard up to HD and “Best Available”)
- Select an output format if you want conversion after download
- Choose a destination folder for saved files
After setting your preferences, hit the download command to start immediately or schedule it for later. Active jobs move to the Tasks area where each item shows a thumbnail, the link, duration, file size and status.
Managing downloads and queue controls
In Tasks you can control active items with an icon bar that provides commands such as:
- Remove, Start and Pause for individual downloads
- Add a new link or local file via the plus buttons
Download times vary according to file size and your network speed. The task list lets you watch progress and manage multiple transfers.
Converting files inside the app
In the Convert section you can:
- Browse for a source file on your computer
- Choose a target format and set options like trimming start/end times and adjusting volume
- Save the converted clip to a chosen folder and optionally add it to iTunes
Trim times are entered manually and volume is adjusted with a slider. You may convert immediately or queue the job for later.
Comparable tools and alternatives
If you’re evaluating other free programs, consider:
- 4K Video Downloader
- YTD Video Downloader
- Freemake Video Converter Each has slightly different approaches: some combine download-and-convert in one app (YTD, 4K), while others split those functions into separate tools (Freemake).
