Quick way to check CPU and memory use
If you want to see how much of your processor and RAM is being used, the built-in Windows Task Manager can show those values. It requires opening the Security Options screen (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and its default view is functional but rather plain and not very detailed.
Limitations of the built-in tool
Task Manager is fine for quick checks, but it doesn’t provide an attractive or persistent visual on the desktop, nor does it always present historical trends or compact status indicators that are easy to monitor at a glance.
A lightweight desktop monitoring gadget
All CPU Meter is a small desktop gadget that displays processor and memory activity visually on your screen. It was created with Windows Vista in mind and works well on systems with multiple cores (dual, quad and newer multicore CPUs).
What the gadget shows
- A scrolling history graph so you can watch usage patterns over time.
- Separate readouts for memory and CPU load, presented with clear values and percentages.
- Visual indicators such as status bars and optional bar-graph presentation for quick interpretation.
- Simple compatibility with multicore setups (dual/quad and above).
Appearance and personalization
Customization options are limited but useful: you can switch the display style (for example to a bar graph look) and tweak the widget’s background color to better fit your desktop theme.
When it’s most helpful
Use All CPU Meter to keep an eye on general system performance, to spot slowdowns, or to help diagnose memory leaks and other resource-related issues that develop over time.
Recommended free alternative
CPU Meter Pro is a free, commonly recommended option if you want a similar desktop display with slightly different styling or options.
