Brief description
ActiveSync is a legacy synchronization utility created by Microsoft to keep data in sync between mobile devices and desktop PCs. It provides a straightforward way to manage and mirror important information between a handheld device and a computer.
Release and supported Windows versions
First published on September 10, 1996, ActiveSync was intended for use with Windows XP and earlier desktop operating systems. Support for ActiveSync ended for newer Windows releases when Microsoft introduced a successor for later versions of Windows.
Main capabilities
- Move files to and from the desktop, and create manual backups of device content when needed.
- Automatically synchronize email, address book entries, and calendar items so both devices show the same information.
Replacement and when it’s still useful
ActiveSync was superseded by Windows Mobile Device Center beginning with Windows Vista. However, if you are still running Windows XP or an older edition, ActiveSync remains a practical tool for simplifying device synchronization and file management.
