App overview and purpose
ActiveOBD is an OBD-II diagnostic application built with Subaru vehicles in mind. Created by Mykhailo Zolotarov, the app brings many capabilities familiar to users of the earlier “ActiveOBD for Subaru” tool to iOS devices. It gives Subaru owners straightforward access to live vehicle parameters and basic diagnostic information through a mobile interface.
Compatible adapters and connection notes
ActiveOBD works best with higher-end Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi dongles but also supports several affordable options. Recommended adapters for the highest reliability and responsiveness include:
- Veepeak OBDCheck BLE+
- Vgate iCar Pro WiFi
- Viecar Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE)
- Vgate iCar Pro Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) — budget-friendly option
- OBDLink CX
- vLinker MC+
- OBDLink MX+
Adapters marked as “premium” deliver the best speed and stability. Lower-cost BLE adapters still function well for many tasks but may have reduced performance on some models.
What the free edition offers
The no-cost tier provides several useful live readings and a clear gauge display, including:
- AWD duty cycle percentage
- CVT ratio readout
- CVT oil temperature
Availability of specific parameters can vary by Subaru model and year, so some readings may not be present for all vehicles.
Upgrading to the full feature set
A subscription unlocks additional capabilities for users who need deeper insight:
- Access to an expanded set of sensor parameters
- Graphing tools to visualize sensor data over time
- Logging of collected data (best used with a premium adapter)
- The ability to read trouble codes and view diagnostic information
Note: graphing and logging are activated only when those features are in use and cease when the app session ends, minimizing continuous resource use.
Who should consider this app
ActiveOBD is useful for Subaru enthusiasts, owners who want to monitor vehicle health, and anyone who prefers on-the-go diagnostics without specialized shop equipment. It’s particularly valuable if you pair it with a high-quality adapter for reliable data capture.
Additional utilities (unrelated)
There are standalone utilities that perform automation tasks on mobile devices, for example automated tap/click tools (often listed as “Auto Clicker — Automatic Tap” and available free). These are separate utilities and are not required to use ActiveOBD.
Getting started
Download ActiveOBD from the App Store, pair it with a compatible OBD-II adapter, and follow the in-app prompts to begin viewing live vehicle data. For the most stable experience with advanced features, choose one of the recommended premium adapters.
