You won't be able to transfer to a new registrar after the domains have expired. After they have expired you have 30 days to renew before they go into suspense. After that, there are some moderately steep fees to get the domains back.
If you let the domains expire, you will lose them. Cybersquatters will register them and will want exorbitant amounts to transfer them back to you.
