A couple of questions:
1. Did you run from a terminal to see if there was any error output?
2. Have you used prior versions successfully?
3. Is there any chance you have an underlying permissions or space issue on the disk?
4. What version of SQLAlchemy are you using?
To have something show up in the index one moment and disappear the next is strange indeed. This may indicate a SQLite...

Not sure what's going on, but whatever it is, it's a bug I'd like to fix.
Gourmet should do a good job of making a backup of your database before it tries to update so you shouldn't have lost any data.
Can you email me the contents of your ~/.gourmet/ directory? Hopefully with the file itself I can both rescue your database and fix the bug that caused the problem.

15,000 recipes is a lot more than I've ever tested with -- that's probably why you're seeing strange behavior.
I'm glad to hear Gourmet is working somewhat though with so many recipes.
