Thanks for the update! For what it's worth: it has also been a real challenge to get this game to run in Wine on Linux, only since 3.5 or so does it not crash on boot, but then I need to make sure the directdraw implementation uses GDI. (The game itself doesn't actually work for other reasons there :))

Oh sorry, I meant VMWare is the only VM I can get it to run in without DxWnd or with the hybrid renderer. The game also works on non-virtualized Windows, but I'm on Linux & so I can only use virtual machines to test it. I mainly use Windows XP in VMWare to play it without DxWnd. When I use Windows 10 I need DxWnd because the game will lag too much otherwise.

I've been using DxWnd in a virtual machine so I can play "Creatures 2", an artificial life game. Now, Creatures 2 on its own only works on Windows in VMWare. It fails in Virtualbox or Qemu. But because the Windows 10 DirectDraw implementation is so bad, I need DxWnd. Creatures 2 is an MFC application, so it has toolbars and such. The only renderer that works is "hybrid", all the others draw the game part of the window in the wrong location. The problem is that "hybrid" does not work on other VMs....
