Here is a really cool idea that will make TightVNC stand out from the crowd big time! I don't know what level your programming skills are, or if you are capable of doing this, but if you can pull this off, TightVNC would be one killer MUST have app!
Are you familiar with Multiplicity or Synergy? Same idea but better. The idea is to simply attach multiple remote computers via VNC sessions...

I have the same issue. Everything installed just fine. update-alternatives shows fingerprint.so as being the default. I ran sudo update-initramfs -u as per the instructions... rebooted, rebooted.... Nothing!! I run usplash -c like you did and it hangs.
I wonder if it has something to do with I am 64 bit?.
