I wasn't actually 100% sure of this, and had to look at the code to be sure, but anyway, it seems that if something is a Number as well as a String, i.e. implements TemplateNumberModel as well as TemplateScalarModel, ${x} will get the numerical value and do locale-related formatting. The same applies if something is a Date as well as as String.
