Hi,
A faster synchronize-from-scratch method has been requested before but hasn't been implemented yet. Currently, there are shortcuts to set the subtitle start and end times, but the subtitles aren't selected automatically/sequentially, so it doesn't do the job the way you need.
If you want to track progress on this, be sure to check the following bug report, which mentions Media...

Thanks for the info, the problem is precisely that auto-detection fails to detect any encoding, so it reverts to the "fallback" encoding, which is windows-1252. I think the fallback encoding should also be an option, going to add it to the bug report.

Hi,
When you open a subtitle file you have the possibility to use a specific encoding, if you opt not to use auto-detection. The same thing goes to when you save subtitles. The possibility to always use a specific encoding has been requested for development and included in the bug report I mentioned before.

No problem. By the way, it would be useful if you could paste the output of running Gnome Subtitles from a terminal. It will display the encoding that was automatically detected, useful to compare with the encoding that *should* have been detected.

Hi,
That error doesn't give much info, although it seems like a library issue. I don't have an environment with those versions to test, although you could try the following:
1) cd to the gnome-subtitles installation dir (usually /usr/lib/gnome-subtitles/
2) run mono --trace gnome-subtitles.exe > ~/output.txt 2>&1
This will create an output.txt file in your user dir, hopefully...
