Were you using the Gutenprint drivers prior to the upgrade to Snow Leopard or were you using the drivers supplied by HP? There has been no change to the Gutenprint drivers between versions of OS X. The Gutenprint drivers will, however, produce different output than the HP drivers.

It would appear that the MP 161LN is primarily a Windows printer. There is an **option** that allows it to use PCL 5e or PCL 6.

Thank you for a detailed description of what you seeing. It can get confusing. Despite what you describe, the custom presets do work -- at least on the Mac. I am not familiar enough with Ubutntu to know if the presets will work properly there. I would expect they will. I will try to explain a bit further.

Saving presets seems to be working for me. There are two ways to try to resolve the issue for you.
Method 1: Go to the /Library/Preferences folder in your Home folder. Delete all entries that begin with com.apple.print. Then log out and then log back in again. This will delete all your existing printer preferences.

I would ask that you update to OS X 10.6.2. There are some color profile fixes in that update.

I am glad you were able to find something that worked.
Perhaps the best/easiest way to assign the large format printer driver is to delete the exiting printer and add a new one. When you get to the point of selecting a driver, use the "Select a driver to use..." section. Then you can scroll down to find the listing for "Generic PCL 6/PCL XL LF Printer - CUPS + Gutenprint 5.2.4"
