I've committed a trivial fix: preserving the spaces by using quotes in the call to bin/hrm, and internally there. That will help for a while, before we apply more restrictions to the username. At this moment 'Marcus Tullius Cicero' will be a valid account.
Right now, users are tempted to write there their real name, nothing in the interface suggests that it should be a short word. But if this...

The HRM application form (and most of the HRM) allows users to request accounts with user names that contain spaces, like 'Marcus Tullius Cicero'. But then the user directory is created in such a way that only the first word is used ('Marcus'), so it can not be linked to the user anymore.

The new account application form doesn't seem to have any limitation on the amount of characters the user can write in e.g. the 'Research group', but the database won't accept long strings. HRM will generate a 'Database error, contact the person in charge' without further explanations if (at least) this field is too long.
Maybe this was solved but I haven't updated? The problem sounds to me...
