Another update. :-)
Actually, it is the PostgreSQL JDBC driver which is causing the problems, obviously.
There seems to have been a change between the 8.2 and the 8.3 versions of the JDBC driver, which no longer causes the above exception.
Insofar, login works with PostgreSQL 8.2.6 and PostgreSQL JDBC3 driver 8.3.603. No further tests were performed so far.

The above problem is solved with PostgreSQL 8.3.4 (maybe earlier versions from the 8.3 branch, but didn't test them).
Please update the documentation so as to point out that 8.3.x is a REQUIREMENT.

Testing OpenMDX 2.1.0 and OpenCRX 2.1.0 with JBoss 4.2.2GA and PostgreSQL (both 8.1.14 and 8.2.6) throws the following exception upon bootstrap:
