I tried 1 of the machines, the rest I installed an older distro which we have on everything else and has proven to be the most stable for our application. We could not wait to see if your suggested procedure would work with CentOSv4.4. I waited until the other boxes were reinstalled and even though the 1 did not lockup yet, we could not wait, so that server we also re-installed an older distro.

That has been done by way of failure. Meaning I had to power them down because they locked up and became unresponsive. However, I did not pull the cord or count off any predetermined amount of time. And if I recall, the WoL is disabled in the BIOS.
You say a rare case, but I have 5 servers all behaving similar. They have all locked, I am willing to try, but right now they are running...

since then, the machines will lock leaving nothing in any log. machines have to be rebooted...
