Hi, this is the author of xdm-options.
xdm-options is a full configuration of the X Display
Manager (launches X continually, offers login, and
desktop choice).
It's on Source Forge and has screenshots to look at.
It's competitive with GDM but can run with just
/bin/ash (no extra libs or bins required).
I think it's the best display manager setup available
for trying various...

You shouldn't be using unix name xdm.
That's copyright Keith Packard MIT (X Windows distribution) and is confusing as to many open software.
xdm, xdm-options, gdm, kdm, wdm.
