Vanilla 2.4.2 on FreeBSD gives the following when, say, browsing for servers:
LHNET_Write: sendto returned error: Address family not supported by protocol family
(repeatedly)
Obviously, you see nothing in the servers list.

I'm well aware of that, thanks. In this case, you should properly document it, as script logic is not obvious up front. Another thing is that configure script is broken nonetheless. I did not think about CygWin and friends, but I still think you can think over what I proposed there. Should I comment more on my changes?.

Well, I think I can be considered as FreeBSD tester and porter. In fact, without my patches biew 5.6.4 is not buildable on Fedora 8 (i386), at least.
Issues I mentioned are not FreeBSD specific.

Version 5.6.4 apparently has broken configure script. Plus, it's logic seems severely broken in some places to me. Additionally, tools' makefiles (biewhlp and lzss) are stale (they try to include makefile.inc, which should be config.mk) and also broken (missing CFLAGS/LDFLAGS assignments).
