Spyamp offers mp3 files for download over http (albeit with the wrong MIME type, to work around an MSIE bug back in 2002). It has no dependence on Winamp in the receiving end. Any player that accepts a .mp3 file can be used.

Yes, you probably need to look for a setting on the router to forward ports to your local machine. Note that the "Firewall port" setting in SpyAmp has nothing to do with making it work, you just have to set it to show up in the server list AFTER you've got everything working.
Some more info is at http://spyamp.sourceforge.net/info.php and the manual of your router.

I have now downgraded to 0.7.4, and the message corruption
has stopped.

I can confirm this. I had to upgrade to 0.8 because Hotmail
changed their protocol, and since then a lot of mail has
been corrupted. It often loses important headers, such as
From/Subject/Date, and sometimes the message body ends up
among the headers.

I've been informed that SpyAmp 1.6.3 works great with Winamp 5, so you should use that version instead of SpyAmp 2.x if you use Winamp 5.

Really? Does Winamp 5 work with all plugins written for Winamp 2?.

It has been reported that SpyAmp will crash on Winamp 5.x when someone tries to download a song. I do not have the time or motivation to fix this, so my advice is to disable song downloading in the SpyAmp configuration if you use winamp 5.x.

Somehow all the files in /home/groups/s/sp/spyamp (and
subdirs) have become owned by the "dummy" user. Please
chown them back to me, bones0.

I've never heard of it doing such a thing. Of course this is not the intended behavior, so fixing it in the source is not as simple as removing a line of code. However, if you'd like to help fixing the bug I'd appreciate it.

The problem is your browser. Try a recent version of Internet Explorer or Mozilla.
