I debugged this and it turned out to be the registry entry Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ditto\PastSearchXml which contained over 400 MB (!) of garbage data. This caused CSymbolEdit::LoadPastSearches() to take forever and use up loads of memory. I don't know how the garbage data got there but I suspect it may have been caused by me accidentally pasting stuff into the search field, which then triggered a bug and ended up saving garbage into the registry.
