It seems to me that the normal pickaxe should be
1handed (as it is in vanilla), mainly as a matter of
convenience. Unlike the mattock it is such a weak
weapon that it would not IMO be unbalancing to wield
with a shield (or dual, for that matter).

Regarding the difference on this point between Vanilla
and Slash I must quote those more knowledgeable than
myself:

Pat Rankin wrote in r.g.r.n.:
" Real life is not particularly relevant here; having
to remove your shield in order to dig is a big hassle
as far as playability goes. NetHack did have pick-
axes function as two-handed for a while (quite
possibly in the interval between 3.1.3 and 3.2.0), but
that got changed without ever appearing in a public
release. "

J.Ali Harlow wrote:
" I can only tell you that when 3.2 reset the bimanual
bit, Enrico Horn did not do the same for Slash 4.1.2,
from which Slash'EM is descended. Whether this was
intentional or not and what his reasons may have been
only he will know. "

Cheers,
Luke

should be considered for Polearms, which are pretty useless as they can
only be used from two squares distance and it is a hassle to specify every one
of your attacks' targets. What about removing the melee penalty at Basic
    polearm skill?
