Follow up to my previous submission...
I checked the two reports you mentioned and they are not quite the same as mine.
Another point to add... while I was running applejack, my electrical power stopped briefly (my Mac is on a UPS)... this probably triggered some message to the OS from the UPS or OS-level power management code.
Anyway, the result is that applejack seems to get stuck after doing the disk check/repair, during the permissions check/repair phase.
Yes, I am running 10.4.10 on a dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC (Oct 2004 model) with 8 GB RAM.
Whenever I now run applejack, it stops and shuts down the computer before I can copy down the screen text. To work around this, I have photographed the display right as this happens. So, you should be able to get some good info from the photo (see uploaded/attached JPEG file).
Thanks.

Aha, you have a UPS! This bug thread addresses the issue:
http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1742373&group_id=79562&atid=557034
Apple introduced some changes in 10.4.10 (changes==bugs) that mean it doesn't know how to deal with the UPS in single user mode anymore. The users in the thread referenced above say that they can work around the issue by unchecking certain settings in the Energy Saver panel.
Please file a bug report with Apple. Thank you!
I've added your comment to that bug thread. Thank you.
